Although it took twenty years to become official in Ann Arbor, Desmond Howard was already a ]V[ichigan legend the moment he last stepped off the college field.
In one of the most impressive football performances in any level, Howard set not only a Wolverine single-season TD receiving record during the 1991 season with 19 touchdown grabs, he also set that mark for the Big Ten conference as well. Both records that still stand.
Howard’s ability to electrify an audience transcends even his smile’s ability to light up a room. If ever there was a player who was worth the price of admission or was considered “must see” television, Desmond was it.
Whether he was diving too far to believe and still coming up with a critical game saving TD grab in-bounds to seal a victory (Notre Dame) or breaking an improbable 93-yard punt return against the enemy (Ohio State) and finishing it with a pose for the ages, Howard could and did do it all.
Howard is one of only three Wolverines ever to win the Heisman Trophy in college and is a three-time Big Ten Conference champion, a Super Bowl champion and Super Bowl MVP and owns a spot in the College Football Hall of Fame.
The “Legend” Desmond Howard may have been born in Ohio, but for sure he was made in ]V[ichigan.
In 19 days, legends will be made again…
